Our Tikanga

The 6 Rays of the Uenuku form the guiding pou tikanga for Tū Pono Te Mana Kaha ō te whānau.

Tū Pono Te Mana Kaha ō te whānau has been endorsed by Te Waipounamu as laying the foundation and setting the standard of what it will take for whānau to Whakatika te Huarahi – Haerenga Whakamua: Ready the Path and Move Forward – Move Forward Together.

Our Charter of Commitment

“HE AHA TE MEA NUI O TE AO? HE TĀNGATA, HE TĀNGATA, HE TĀNGATA”

This Charter illustrates a commitment from ngā marae to ensure a “zero tolerance” policy to whānau harm.   This means that our whānau promotes behaviour that opposes and addresses bullying, put downs, shouting, unwanted sexual or physical contact, or any other behaviour that affects an individual’s tinana, wairua, hinengaro and that of their wider whānau.

Our commitment is that all people who belong to or visit ngā marae that have agreed to the charter, are provided a safe and secure environment.  The commitment from Tū Pono Te Mana Kaha o te Whānau is that it supports ngā marae to achieve this.

 Marae agree that:

  • Any act of whānau harm is a transgression against the whakapapa, mana and tapu of the individual and their whānau
  • We will stand up, speak out and stop any transgressions that compromise the safety of whānau
  • If we become aware that whānau are experiencing harm within their home or community environment, we will offer them help them to connect to the support services they need
  • We do not condone known offenders of whānau harm taking lead roles on the Marae
  • If a perpetrator admits to acts of whānau harm and requests support, we will aim to link them to the appropriate iwi organisation and community supports
  • Tū Pono will safeguard all personal information gathered and provide marae with statistical data to offer insights into how we approach our work
  • We will be kahukura and provide leadership within our own whānau, hapū and iwi, and communities to reduce whānau harm
  • We will be role models, advocates of the kaupapa of Tū Pono Te Mana Kaha o te Whānau.
